Steps to a Successful Job Search

Q: What are some important considerations when choosing a recruiting firm?
A: You should ask the recruiter some basic questions to get a sense of the personís knowledge and commitments. For example, is the recruiter knowledgeable about the actuarial profession? To find out, ask about industry trends, current salary levels, etc. Make sure the recruiter will contact you prior to sending your resume to companies. In addition, it is important that you have confidence that your recruiter will be proactive and contact you as developments occur. Contact a Stewart Search Advisor to work with a professional in the actuarial recruiting field.

Q: How do I respond to the news that I was recently rejected for a new actuarial position?
A: First of all, try to find out why. Here, the hiring authority or an experience recruiter may be able to offer you useful feedback. Often the reason is not in your control. For example, a strong internal candidate may have filled the position, or you may not fit with the company or department culture. If the loss of interest was due to an interviewing mistake or poor reference, stay positive and learn from each experience.

Q: In an increasingly specialized actuarial profession, how can I be sure Iím remaining competitive relative to my peers?
A: It is crucial to your career that you constantly monitor your specific industry for the latest trends, changes, and growths. Read trade magazines, participate in professional organization activities, and develop contacts at all levels of the profession. A Search Advisor can offer you the knowledge of the industry and an outside perspective of your skills and experience that will help to determine how you compare to peers and your competitiveness in the profession.
